Thinking like a historian

Once you think like a historian, it’s nearly impossible to stop.

Ordinary days become a part of the historic record.
Holidays offer the opportunity to become a part of a community’s shared cultural and historical experiences.
Meeting a new person, taking a new job, or even taking a different way home from the store is rife with possibilities of producing a ripple which could impact future generations for years to come.
Old buildings are admired.
Family stories beg to be documented.
Photos demand to be archived.

When you think like a historian, you admire the past for the lessons it can offer and the people who lived there. You recognize that the world—and its citizens—don’t revolve around you. Rather, you’re a small part of something huge: by simply living on this earth, you participate daily in the complex and webbed story of all of us.

Once you think like a historian, it’s nearly impossible to stop. And I hope you never do.
