This short unit study covers the basics of American football, in context, through the 20th Century and beyond. While information about the game (key definitions, how to play, football positions, etc.) is given in the Resources section, the goal of this study is to understand football as it developed into the American historical timeline. It includes a lengthly list of final project ideas which can stretch these lessons into an entire semester (or longer).
Includes 6 lessons, appropriate for grades 5th+ (although younger students are able to participate, it may be too academically advanced)

Disclaimer: This study is not a handbook for football plays, a book of stats on individual players, or meant to teach a student every aspect of the game. It’s decidedly historical and cultural in nature, and would make a great addition to an American history unit.
